Knife makers Kaila Cumings and Kyle Farace invited me into their Southern Vermont studio.
In a male dominated profession, Kaila was one of the original female knifemakers. Self taught, her hardwork, dedication and craftsmanship has allowed her to create and build her business Kaila Cumings Knives. Not only is she an amazing artist she is also a badass appearing on Discovery Channel's show Naked and Afraid twice and competing on the show Forged in Fire! Kyle Farace a proud Vermonter learned the craft from Kaila (his now wife) and brings his knowledge of woodworking, sewing and leather working to compliment his hammered creations.

Growing up in Southern Vermont we always had a garden with fresh fruit, herbs and vegetables. As an adult I appreciate it even more. It creates an opportunity to connect with nature and understand the hard work that goes into cultivating clean nutritious food and tending to land.

Over the years Ishmael has shared his backyard with many Native and Indigenous leaders for sacred ceremonies. It was a hot summer morning in Miami but so beautiful to see a community gather to meet the visiting Colombian spiritual leaders called, Mamos.
